Sophia's Scales

Updated: Aug 22, 2022

Sophia was a very proud and beautiful dragon.

No one's scales shined like hers.

All of her friends and all of her teachers agreed that her hide was the most beautiful in all the land, as well as that she was one of the kindest creatures in the community.

Every year Sophia longed to audition for the school play.

Oh, how bright her scales might shine under those beautiful lights.

In the fall of her seventh year, Sophia was finally allowed to audition!

And you know what? She got in!

Sure, it was a small role, but who cares? For she would still stand on that stage, and her scales would get to glisten.

She worked hard in rehearsals. Always on time and never complaining. But when tech week came, something was terribly wrong.

The costume for her role as begger #3 was a giant burlap sack! It would cover all of her scales! Did not Director want the stage to be as bright as it could be?

Oh Sophia was angry. How could this be! When she went home she slammed the door behind her. Her mother, Katrina, looked up from the dinner she was preparing.

“What’s wrong my dear?” She asked. Sophia, bristling with anger, explained everything.

“Oh Sophia, you are indeed beautiful. But I never thought you are beautiful because of your scales, but because of your kindness and your ability to bring out the best in others. At least that’s what your friends say about you.”

This struck Sophia. She did have very good friends. They all challenged each other to be the best that they could be. But she also didn’t like that her mom ignored her scales. “Do you not think I’m beautiful?“

“Sophia, you are beautiful in every way. Everyone already sees your scales, but show them the very best parts of you.“

And so she did. She wore the costume proudly, even added a hood as well to help her character, and it turned out she had a knack for this acting thing!

On the flight home, Sophia could see her mother smiling broadly. Sophia knew that she would never be anything less than beautiful.
